Trying to figure him out

Ok I feel weird posting this but I need help trying to understand this one boy. I'm a freshman in high school. There's this boy in my gym class who I know who he is but I don't know him and we have only said like 5 words to each other. But I see him a lot in the hallways and i catch him lOoking at me. Everytime I see him he's lOoking at me. And with kinda a happy face and a face that's trying to figure out my mood. My friends think he likes me but idk. Wat do u think? I want to look back at him in the halls and smile buts its kinda awkward plus we've never really talked. How does sOmeone just start talking to a stranger or somebody they like? Both him and I are shy. Thanks'
