Marina Abramovic, a Serbian performance artist met the German artist Ulay in the 1976 when she moved to Amsterdam. They started an intense love story performing art out of the van they were living in. In 1988 when they felt the relationship had run its course decided to make a spiritual journey to end it. Each of them walked the Great Wall of China, starting from the two opposite ends and meeting in the middle for a last hug and saying good bye.
In 2010 she performed The Artist is Present in New York, a silent piece when different spectators took turns sitting opposite her sharing a moment of silence. Ulay arrived without her knowing it. This is what happened.

This actually made me cry, and I don't often tear-up. When I first read it the cynic in me screamed 'PR STUNT', and I still wouldn't entirely discount that to an extent, they're performance artists after all, and even if you believe that she didn't know he was going to show up (I'm choosing to believe that she didn't) other people clearly did know and made sure it was caught on camera with close-ups etc - not usually what happens with an action is truly spontaneous and unexpected. But that said, it still touched me deeply regardless, and I don't believe the emotional reactions they each showed is something that can be faked - it truly was a beautiful moment and something I will remember for a long time - thank you very much for sharing!
