How many greats are among us?

This is was a topic that came up on GDC when people were talking about the race roots and where great racers come from.

PP hit on this in the Tiger "Cheetah" Woods thread. The boy that could solve a Rubik's cube with his eyes closed........

Anyone else ever wonder how many people you talk to day to day that are potentially the best XXXXX in the world? Just how much talent is locked inside people who never get the chance to unleash it for family/financial/locational reasons, etc?

    Incidentally, check this girl out:

Look at the quality of the work she's done when she was just 5 or 6. That's insane.

It makes me wonder on how if you want to be the best at something, how much of that is based off of natural talent.

My only real talent is for taking care of people and making them feel safe/cared about. I think those qualities help make me a good nurse. I wish I had a real talent though... I would love to be able to sing (more than simply on-key) or dance with skill.

Seeing as 99% of the "talented kids" that you hear about are just performing various kinds of entertainment I don't really give a crap.

I'm not the best in the world... but I've been dancing for 19 years. I am pretty damn great at it and maybe someday I will get to teach. It may be far-fetched but someday I would like to open my own studio or start a dance camp. A quixotic dream of mine is to have my own school of arts and include different departments, Performing Arts, Fine Arts and Media Arts, ohhhhhh how I wish.

And also... Cosmetology. Making women feel beautiful, helping their self esteem. It's challenging. I want to get better and better in this field.

Chase your dreams. I don't get better at riding by sitting on my bike in the garage making "vroooom" noises

Tiger Woods is an entertainer, far as I am concerned. If there wasn't big endorsements from rich business types, he's be doing something else.

Hahahahaha, the funny part is, I have yet to take a girl for a ride on a bike without making them horny. I don't know what it is, but it does it.

I think my only talent is to learn quick languages... I've read somewhere that kids who learn few languages ,are able to learn quicker and more in the future. I was that kid. My only problem is that I'm too lazy and I can't force myself to do things... When at school I could have been the best in my class(or in few fields in whole school) without even looking into a book at home, after it wasn't that easy anymore... I think the only thing I have to work out to be better is my lazyness , who knows some really good tips for killing the lazy monster?
    I wazzzz here
