Is it that important that the man be older than the woman?

I mean, I'm 21 and people keep telling me to go for the younger girls (around 17 years old) but I don't really like the way they think and tend to prefer girls around my age, even a little older. It makes things more difficult for me as there's this whole women-date-older-men folklore. And there are many more relationships in which the woman is the younger person. So, is it true that there's a rule that men should go for younger women (at least 2 years younger)? Or is it just something invented?

I don't know the answers to your questions. I have a friend who is with a man many years younger than her. Choose personality and character and not age but certainly do not date a 17 year old!

There is no rule. Date whom ever you want and don't listen to your friends when they tell you who to date.

If you can get a girl your age or older to accept a date, then why not? Just keep in mind that your mom's friends should be off limits.

    There is no rule.
It actually depends on the person on what she/he wants.
If you want younger than you then that would be fine.
If older than than, that would be also fine.
No law was implemented that you should have younger or older partner.

It's not a rule, it's just the way things have turned out because of the notion that men need to be the bigger, stronger, protective ones.

Thought that this would be true to ones of the same age as well.

But I don't actually know, right now I'm spending time with a girl who's 3 years older.

My girlfriend is 4 years older than me.

My girlfriend's older sister is a year older than her husband.

My mother was older than my step father.

I've met plenty of couples where the females is older.

    I'm (25-Polish)

I met a girl recently,(28-Russian), that is interested.

My new dance partner,(23-Polish), isn't currently looking she says.

P.S. I'll see which one appeals to me more, when getting to know them better.

It all depends how well you think your life will be together.
Some women or men like younger or older, there's nothing wrong with that, just
don't make the age gap too big or go after individuals that are too early to start
dating when your already a stage when you can be on your own.

** My dad is 4 years younger than my mom, and they managed to be
together for 28 years, and give birth to 3 children, so anything is possible

I'm 22 and my girlfriend is 25. She's with me because I'm more mature than most 25 year old guys lol. And I have my shit together. (pardon my french) I love the fact that she is older, and has a steady job and a house. My ex was 20 and she acted like a little girl and was very illogical and immature and always acted like a baby. I feel like what I have now is so much more mature and on a higher level than before. So no, age isn't ALWAYS important but for maturity purposes the older males/females tend to be easier to have a relationship with. But then again like I said it depends on the person too as I'm more mature than most guys that are older than me.

There is no rule, but I believe some women date older men for their level of maturity compared to the level of men their ages. It's been said that women mature faster than men, which I do believe. I'm only at 18 and I'm already planning my future to settle down. But my bf isnt at that level(He's 18 too). Oh well, point is, there's no rule, but if you have no problem with dating younger women then go for it, you might like how it turns out. But 17?Thats a tad bit too young since she'd be technically underage.Plus I doubt her family or your family would like that.
