To disambiguate the meaning of a Dr. Seuss tale, the Cat in the Hat...
If I am correct, the story of the cat in the hat is all about a childhood coping mechanism of sexual abuse
The cat in the hat is a metaphor for the fathers uncircumsized penis. Seuss, as a young child powerless to resist his fathers incestuous advances, mentally escaped the horror of his reality by making a game of it, and treating the fathers penis and foreskin as a less menacing cat and oversized hat, respectively
The mess caused by these "fun and games" at the end was embarassing and frightening to the young Seuss, who knew it was wrong (although not completely why) and wanted to hide it from the others
