Is My Insomnia Related to Living Alone?

A friend of mine says that I stay up until odd hours (2-3 am) because I don't have anyone telling me that I should go to bed. Also, that lonely people tend to stay up because they're lonely and don't want to sleep alone.

I didn't have this problem in my late teens and early 20's. Became an issue in my 30's. It is an age thing or a alone thing?

    Thoughts? Anyone else experience this?

What do you do that makes you stay up late?

Apart from when studies/work is compelling it I generally get to sleep at decent hours simply because otherwise I know that I'll feel like shit the next day, but then again I wake up around 7-8 regardless of when I fall asleep.

Is it because you can't sleep or just bored?

Though you may have other contributing factors, it's a normal part of aging.

Thanks for the input. I workout daily, so the exercise thing is covered. I'll do some work and will mess around with data analysis. Check email. Do mindless research just to keep busy while I can't sleep.

I'll generally force myself out of bed between 6:30 and 7 am. I don't go to an office very often--work from home.

If I go to bed at 10 pm, then I'm awake by 2 am and can't fall back to sleep.

Well it depends. I go to sleep at around 2am for the last couple of months and I get up at either 6am if going to the gym before work or at 7:45 to go straight to work. Either way, I feel fine.
Your body gets used to lack of sleep and pretty soon it doesn't even become 'lack' of sleep, just a different amount you need compared to others.
Thats why I don't agree with all these government studies about how sleeping such& such amount affects your concentration etc. I'm sure a drastic change will do that but training your body on less sleep is fine in my experience.

The worst thing though is keeping your mind active before going to bed. Read, not from the computer either. Read a book and turn the tele off.

Being lonely can affect things though.

I'm the same way CAM, I do the 10-2 sleep routine if I can sleep at all.

I think for me it does have a bit to do with being single, I certainly seemed to sleep more when I was sharing my bed...but I also spent more time laying wide awake, trapped by a sweaty arm in a dark room.

While I usually sleep 11-7 normally, when I'm sleeping next to my girl I usually don't wake up until 10 and then half-sleep until 12 if I can. So that might help
