How to tell if a e mail is still active

Is there anyway of finding out if a e mail is still valid or exists.

If it sends back to you a message "not a valid address, message cannot be sent" then it's no longer active.

As said above it won't be able to be sent, they won't be found and so the email will probably bounce back to you. I had my yahoo email hacked by whomever was hacking yahoo mail through out the world this last year and it sent out mails to everyone in my account, even long ago old mails and half bounced back at not existing.
