There's a girl in my year at university that i'd like to get to know better and maybe ask out but I feel that we're still stuck on small talk. I've known her for a long time but i don't think i'm in the 'friend zone' or anything. Whats a good topic of conversation or other thing to say to guage the waters?

How about just letting you know how you feel? Im not saying pour your heart out but, make sure she understand this like is more than the just a friend kinda like. Ask her if shed like to see a movie sometime or go out for a cup of coffee.

Its brief, but what Boisdevie said is accurate. Most women like a strong, assertive man. Go in there, make clear your intentions, and either she'll melt like butter, or she'll say no. And trust me, having a woman turn you down is not the end of the world.
