“Inside every cynical person, there is a disappointed idealist”--George Carlin
I've always though it so. Do we really need to research this though? It's kinda common sense. The only difference between reading a book and reading something on the internet is the physical material with the information printed on it, versus the electronic copy, which you can use search criteria to find the answers faster.
Actually according to this part of the article, internet surfing used more complex brain functioning than reading:
"The researchers said that, compared to simple reading, the internet's wealth of choices required people to make decisions about what to click on in order to get the relevant information."
At least that's what I thought it was getting at. I'm sure it depends on what you're reading. Looking at perezhilton.com everyday isn't going to do anything for your brain cells.
