U.S. woman tries to open airplane door at 33,000 feet
COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AFP) — A U.S. woman has been arrested in Copenhagen, Denmark, after she tried to open the emergency door of an airplane while it was flying at 33,000 feet, judicial sources said on Monday.
The 39-year-old woman was placed in police custody for 11 days but was unable to attend her court hearing as she had been admitted to a psychiatric hospital after the incident.
During a Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) flight from Zurich to Copenhagen on Sunday, the woman tried to open the emergency exit door she wanted to smoke a cigarette.
Passengers' screams and an alarm alerted crew to what was going on, and they were able to overpower her and return her to her seat.
The pilot later told police that the woman would not have been able to open the door because of the cabin pressure
