I don't think you scared him away. I think for whatever reason, it just wasn't what he was hoping for. I'm not him, so it's hard to say what was lacking.

Don't put the burden on yourself, most relationships are short lived, ships passing in the night so to speak. It wasn't a love connection this time, but nothing you could have done differently would've changed that. Better to find out now, then a month or two from now right?
