Favorite Visual Artists?

Eh, why not? We've got a music thread now, I figure this one will be less popular, since art is appreciated by such a small population.

Well, the majority of my artwork has a surreal aspect to it, but it is more of a surrealistic/impressionistic/expressionistic approach. I really don't enjoy abstract expressionism, or realism that much. I mean, it seems like most abstract expressionists can't even paint, or whatever medium they use; just seems like they squirt paint straight out of the tube and onto the canvas, which really irritates me. Sometimes more complex theories are involved, but if the only person that really understands your work is you, why make it? With realism, unless it's photography, I don't understand why people do it. Still lifes are boring to me... why is it so old? Well, the camera took its place. I think if one is to paint something, they shouldn't concentrate so much on functioning like a damn camera. I do like some of it though. Realism and Abstract Expressionism do have potential, it just seems that the wrong people are doing it for the wrong reasons.

With that being said, my favorite artists are:

Salvador Dali
Vladimir Kush
Giorgio Chirico
John Constable

What are yours?

Have any artists that I should check out?

I make a distinction b/t art I admire for raw talent but would never put in my home. Here's a few that I really enjoy:

Dali - persistence of memory is one of my fave 'thinking' paintings.
Fuseli - the nightmare b/c it freaks me out everytime I see it
Sketches by DaVinci (the Mono Lisa sucks IMO) - I've seen an exhibit of his early drawings & they are simply incredible!
Rubens - prometheus, again b/c it is so graphic. Here's a link:
http://www.abcgallery.com/R/rubens/rubens114.html

BTW, this is one of those paintings its actually better to view online, lol. I've seen the originial & its MUCH darker.

Nesterov and Kramskoi. Repin.
Turner from the west.

And duch paintings are just classic, Provost and Patinir from 16th century, but Brueghels satire and his picture of Cocaine land just does it for me heheh. A good show of wide spread usage of cocaine in that time.

But do you know any artists of today? Antonov, Leffel, Popov, Soryn?

Personally, I like realism. I like Kramskoi because he was very advanced in his time, captured very detailed realism of portraiture almost photographically with pure eye, but still pictures had certain feel, artists own statement towards personality or mood.
Speaking of todays realism, it is very two sided, split. There is compositional realism, still-life and realism of a scene, sometimes achieved through photographic reference. For me, compositional realism is that what does it for me, like Rembrandt did. its reflecting the moods and events, poetry, which photography cannot reflect, since its composed and hand placed paint with different techniques reflect the mood and atmosphere in another level. I personally find realism as basis of artistic ability, from which you can develop your own style. Through realism, you have felt the world, understood it, and therefore can make your own statements from those experiences, in whichever technique you like. You can't make a statement without experiencing something, and if this statement involves the basis of beauty or deeper reflections of the surrounding world, like abstractionism, a good realist base is important for good outcome.
At the moment I am in the process of learning different brush techniques and colour values. As I am poor and often doesn't have the ability to go out and paint, nor have my own large studio, I find photographic reference a good alternative, although it ruins the eye a bit. Also, I should do more practice in still life -- it gives an understanding of material and you learn to use paint more effeciantly. Anyway, I think I am a freak since I get a really good relaxing feeling when I slide my hands across the surface of the finished painting, feeling the ups and downs, bumps and scratches of the paint. Its like hugging or kissing.

Pfft, can't believe not a damn soul likes my art work. This is something that I just did today. 2 hours and 15 minutes. Pastel (chalk) on toned brown paper. About 8x18". One of the best in the class.

Schnipp! Go to my website if you would like to see this picture. [I have not posted it just yet, will probably be up with other drawings by friday at the latest.]

I don't think Tiay paints. She's more intuitive in the Graphics department. I guess I will let Tiay speak for herself, though. I paint, though It is my major.

Add Franz Marc to my list of favorites. I like his piece, The Death of Animals. I see lots of artists that I like, but those are quite popular. You should study art more, there have been artists of our time that are just as good, if not better.

Well most of you have listed the artists I like, but recently added George Rodrigue, he does the Blue Dog from New Orleans, such awesome stuff. Im thinking of just buying a print for my hubby's b-day, can't afford the real thing. We have bought some great prints from Bombay. I like the abstract painters too. I wish I had just a little bit of these people genes to paint. Just anything!!
everything happens for a reason...beginning to wonder why.
