    German 101

I figure Doppel and lovesjoy can help out on this one.

I studied German for four years and was quite fluent, and through lack of use I can now barely put a sentence together. My grammar is atrocious. I'd like to get some of it back, if possible.

First of all, please re-explain the differences between nominative, imperative, dative, and genetive. I've totally lost all concept.

You can try talking to me in German: I'll probably only understand about 50% of it, but what better way to get back into the swing of things, right.

    All right.

Erstmal: die "Faelle" heissen: Nominativ, Akkusativ, Dativ, und Genitiv.

    Nominativ:

Der Hund frisst einen Kater. (Subjekt)
    Ich mag Schokolade.

    Akkusativ:

Der Hund frisst einen Kater. (akkusatives Objekt - direct object or object of some prepositions)
    Ich liebe dich!

    Dativ:

Ich esse Eis mit meinem Vater. (datives Objekt - usually object of a preposition or indirect object)
Gerald hat mir sein altes Mercedes gegeben. (indirektes Objekt)

    Genitiv: (possessive)
Das Auto meines Vaters ist ein BMW.
    (hier koennte man auch sagen:
Das Auto von meinem Vater ist ein BMW. Im Englischen ist das mit:
"My dad's car is a BMW/the car of my dad is a BMW" zu vergleichen.)

Oooohhhhh, okay. Yes, this is ringing a bell. Will help with the grammar a bit, too.

So, let's see if I remember:

    Nominativ: der, die, das, die

    Akkusativ: den, die, das, die

    The other two?.........

Is it wrong to not like german for all this stuff, even if it's your native language?
I went to school for 13 years and never needed any of that knowledge in school OR RL. But it's still nice to see people who appreciate german, even if i don't
