    I start Boxing Thursday

I can't wait, very excited. Has anyone tried taking up boxing before?

Only kickboxing. Same basic experience, I guess, of someone trying to kick your ass while you try to kick their ass.

I think everyone should so some kind of fighting at some point in their life. It taught me a lot about myself. Plus, I think learning how to handle someone hitting you in the face without shutting down is a good skill, even if it never comes up in actual life.

What about yourself did it teach you?

It taught me that I'm a lot tougher than I thought I was, and that calling somebody "sir" wasn't humiliating if he could totally pwn me sparring. It taught me a lot about body language and, strangely, about community.

    I am a lover, not a fighter. (yeah, I am a wimp.)

My sister is tough, though... 2nd degree blackbelt in karate. I let her handle my dirty work.
Relax... I'll need some information first. Just the basic facts - can you show me where it hurts?

I'll bet you'd be pretty tough if someone went after your kids.

True, I would be a lethal weapon in that case.

That's awesome! I want to join a boxing gym someday. I think it's one of the more practical fighting disciplines out there. Many martial arts like karate and tae kwan do are a waste of money and do crap in a real fight. I'm sorry, but how often do you see people doing roundhouse kicks in the air or blocking a punch with one arm above their head?

You must not have seen some of the better martial artists. The ones I've seen are kick-ass. Of course, they are old-school. I think that the industry has been commercialized a lot in the last 15 years.

Muay Thai is different. Check it out.

Muay Thai is an excellent martial arts to take. It's like a more hardcore version of kickboxing. The difference between them is that elbow and knee strikes are allowed in Muay Thai.

Damn Euro, you're goin' nuts with fitness.

I've still been considering picking one of those things up.

I have a friend who's trained in some type of brazilian kick boxing.

If I had to pick which fighting disciplines are the best, I would say (in no particular order):

    - boxing
    - muay thai
    - wrestling
    - jiu jitsu
    - sambo

I'm planning to run a 26 mile marathon next year so I'm making sure I'm in tip top condition. Plus, I don't procrastinate nomore, I have tonnes more energy and I'm not lazy. So hurrah! for moi. Plus I've ALWAYS wanted to do boxing.

Neo --- Dang, your only 21. I thought you were much older. I find it quite inspiring that you've have entered body buiding contests at what I would consider such a young age. Keep doing your thang man.
