I understand your argument Chlorine, but it doesn't address whether or not capital punishment laws are morally justified.

Now I only read the firs page of this thread, but it seem like most of you are against the death penalty; are you fvckin nut?
Imagine if someone killed your family right in front of you; I'd want them dead. I think it should be left up to the surving family as to how he dies. I also think the old "eye for an eye", let the family member kill him. No needle, I'd want him to suffer. If I were in the courtroom, and the death penalty was overruled, I'd kill the guy right there on the spot, no remorse nothing.
And for those who thinks it costs more to put him to death, well then maybe something needs to be done to change all of the appeals; limit it to one. Fvck, don't give them any.
It would pain me to think that the bastard could laugh or smile once a day, or more, in his cell, watching TV or hearing a joke.

I have no doubt that if someone I knew was murdered, I would absolutely, 100% agree with you, Lloyd. That is why they don't generally allow people who have experienced the murder of a loved one to sit on a jury.
Agreed; my point here I guess is that it's easy for people to sit atop their soapbox and say "this is bad, this is good" whereas when/if it happens to them, they change their tune. Same goes for abortion. But let's not go there...

Goes the same too with drinking and driving... some people might think " oh there nothing wrong if I have a drink and drive.." some other people, like someone who lost of close friend, family member.. will totaly argue this point of view because it affect them personnally!!!!!
People who have experienced these things on a personal basis (of course) lose their ability to be objective and react on a completely emotional level. I don't blame them, as this is exaclty as it would be for me, but again, this inability to separate emotions from rationality is why victims are not allowed to serve on juries dealing with similar cases.
I know when I got jury duty they hounded me over and over because of my relationship with cops in the past. Even though I was not familar with any of those Cities cops! I was hoping to get dismissed but I got stuck on a murder trial!

I can distinguish between right and wrong. If someone commits a planned murder, gets caught and is given trial and found quilty, if the punishment is the death penalty, I am fine with that. I accept such a system. Morals....human rights...religious arguments, doesn't save a person who commited such a serious crime.
I know that we can't give life, create life in a laboratory. So we can't be too quick to take a life either. However, given a fair trial, I think the guilty have to accept their punishment and make their peace with God before they are executed.
