You can do anything you want with a degree in linguistics. You and I are always getting into this practical vs. whatever the hell you call it.... unorthodox objectiveness? Admit it; what it all comes down to is what kind of person you are and what you are capable of. A degree doesn't really mean anything of mere importance.

I think a degree is important, and no, you can't do anything you want - at least not without getting more education - but that wasn't my point. I wanted to know what *specifically* you could do with that degree? I've never actually met anyone with a degree in linguistics. Can you work in research laboratory? Can you treat a mute patient? Can you teach a high school class? What?
