But the culture is quite complex in that many Japanese don't like saying "no" even if a "yes" means a flat-out lie. .

This is sooo true!...it's actually a known fact that Japanese will actually lie rather than tell you something you don't want to hear.
I deal with Japanese people (living in Japan thus totally immersed in this culture) on a daily basis and I find it extremly frustrating, especially as I am very direct myself and quiet the opposite.
