I missed this part. Instead of an audition, think of it as networking with interesting people. I did this and it helped relieve my stress about 'judging' someone, too. Sometimes we ended up talking about work and I just gave them my card. You need to use your judgement, but noone sane will hound you in your professional capacity. I met a nice comp sci guy who turned out to be on the advisory board for a facility in my faculty at the university. It's a small world.
Second thoughts can generally be amended with judicious action; injudicious actions can seldom be recovered with second thoughts.
