Sandisk clip for when I go on rides. I've been very happy with my Sandisk mp3 players. I don't like the Ipod touch for riding...too difficult to use with only one hand and trying to balance a bike.

Personally I hate apple in general. They market pretty crappy stuff at ludicrous prices because it's all hyped up by all their advertising of how apple is superior to microsoft.

More like you're an idiot that can't figure out how to turn on a computer. Here enjoy your dumbed down new toy for surfing the internet and downloading music. Because that's all you know how to do anyways.

The only reason I have the touch is because I got it cheap and I wanted the wifi for checking e-mail, surfing the internet, without the need of a laptop at school.

I assume you are comparing operating systems. Comparing 'apple' who makes hardware & software, vs. Microsoft (mostly software) doesn't really make sense.

I've been using Apple/Mac for 20 years now, have also owned PCs and run both Windows & Linux machines (also used Sun WS, but not really relevant). For the *average* user (i.e. joe blow or ms secretary) Mac are actually easier to use and more reliable. Also more intuitive. This was especially true when they used the Motorola chips. Back compatibility in programs was never an issue the way it was for PCs and I could always go from PC to Mac (tho PCs never really figured this out well).

I haven't had a virus on my Macs EVER. I never had to worry about those email things going around. I let my machines run for months without shutting them down (I do for maintenance). They NEVER crash except for the odd Word or PowerPoint (Microsoft) issue.

But yes, I too think they WERE overpriced. But not anymore. Go have a look at the price of a decent MacBook. You can find one for around $1000, I think.

Most ppl who bash the Macs never owned one. Or are gamers who complain about the lack of games for Mac. Which is also true, tho not sure anymore why, their market share has gone up a lot.

They do seem to have some QC issues these days. I know ppl who have had new laptops w/screen burnout or HDs die. But they are fixed way more efficiently than any of the PCs I ever owned, and they had a lot more problems overall.

    Just saying.

Who said I was talking just about Microsoft? I use linux for a file server I run.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Microsoft Windows. I've had windows since Windows 95. Most issues are usually caused by programs that are installed that interfere with something else usually hanging or causing other problems, not the os itself.

Viruses, I'll give you that. There are virtually none compared to the ones for Windows. But then there's linux. I've worked on my fair share of Sun Work stations as well. So don't think I'm completely clueless here.

Plus anyone that has any clue on how to use any of the services or diagnose a problem can easily fix anything on a windows machine. I've had virtually no issues for years on my PCs. Last major issue I've had was a hard drive with bad sectors...which has nothing to do with the OS.

I think macs are overpriced even today, you say $1000 for a mac? They start at a little over a $1000. Check HP, Dell, etc...you can get a comparable machine for muchless than that.

Macs are overhyped by their advertising and people that don't know jack shit about computers. Sure they're not bad. They're just overrated. I especially hate those stupid mac commercials.

AJ, I explicitly said the *average* user. Not someone who understands Unix and not someone who would know how to repair their own computer.

The average Joe (other than you, who is not average) who buys a Mac will not have as many issues as with a Windows/PC machine. I know this b/c both sets of parents run Windows/PC and we are often having to help them.

As for Windows95+, I dunno. I stopped using PCs a long time ago. But my point is that it should never have taken Microsoft even that long to get their act together. Mac has had a stable OS for much, much longer. MacOS was decent & it only got better when they switched to Unix-based. Microsoft has always been embarrassingly behind the curve in this regard. And in other areas, also. They have been trying to get into the internet search engine market for ages and keep blowing it. And every Firefox (or even Safari) user knows that Explorer blows.

Macs are overhyped by their advertising and people that don't know jack shit about computers.
I know quite a bit about computers, AJ. And lots of comp programmers and engineers who would agree with my historical statements. In fact, there are tons of Macs in science labs. I wouldn't call these ppl exactly computer ignorant.

I have given you an objective summary of my experience with various kinds of computers. Now, I am curious, have you ever owned a Mac yourself?

Now I have technically owned a Macintosh...

    A macintosh II...lol

But I have used modern imacs for quite some time. None have been mine but have used them plenty.

Other than the fact of me being biased against Apple. They're not bad computers. Just overhyped and overpriced. It's become the "hip" thing to own a mac and ipod now.

I agree w/Macs being trendy. But I consider that great marketing. Jobs was a genius for the ipod, IMO. And now the iPhone. And it shows in their stocks. Apple is half the trade volume but > 4 times the value of Microsoft.

And, to be clear, I have issues with some of the new things they are doing. I'm not sure I like the new Intel chips, tho I understand why they are using them. Also, the fact that they make it difficult to do exactly what one wants with the music one buys from iTunes, as a simple example.

Now that they are bigger, they are starting to have some of the same problems that Microsoft experienced. Seems like they are biting off more than they can chew, perhaps, and QC is suffering for it.

The other thing I have really enjoyed over the years is the mac forums. Mac folks had their shit together way before the PC-based crowd in this. I could go online years ago and find a fix (or workaround) for a Mac issue that would leave my PC engineering housemates struggling to figure themselves.

Admin stuff is also way easier on a Mac. There have been times on a PC where one gets into this weird problem of not being able to delete or change a system file. The terminal on the macs makes this very easy, for those who know what to do. And for those who don't, again the forums are terrific.

I actually think that if Macs were as cheap as PCs, then ppl would just buy Macs. I agree, they have this weird elite thing going on, like they are the Lexus of computers or something. But the company seems to be doing well, so I guess they've got it figured.

I have always liked the smaller guy when it comes to computers, they just seem to have a better product.

I have been really happy with my Ipod thus far and shes taken some hard hits but boots right up.

When it comes to computers I build my own because I don't like all the shit that comes on pre-builts that is unneeded and just clutter. Not to mention you can build one at a fraction of the price of a Dell or some other name brand.

As for Indi's comment about gamers, it is frustrating, but honestly, most major games out there these days operate on either platform, World of Warcraft for example.

The thing I learned that I value the most in computers is that AMD eclipses Intel in almost every category in every comp I have built, and they are a hell of a lot cheaper.

Actually, I tried to buy my son the Lego Indiana Jones game, but its only for PC. The guy at the Mac store mentioned something about the obscene Apple licence or something.

So, my choice was PC (not possible), Nintendo DS (which I dont think he needs), or not at all. A bit disappointing b/c I've read its a fun game. So its still an issue.

This is totally off-topic, but I can't help but completely crack up whenever Indie mentions Boobaa and tanks.
