not here. lots of people who have been here for generations are brown. if i get pulled over and a cop were to look at my name on my license they could very easily assume i'm mexican without knowing whether i'm legal or not.

it's like if louisiana was on a border with a country where everybody was chocolate. how the hell do you tell who's illegal and who's not?
baby ya hustle. but me i hustle harder.

I don't understand how it's supposed to work in the Southwest. We have such a large Hispanic population, I suppose all brown people will have to start driving around with their birth certificate. Ridiculous.
Relax... I'll need some information first. Just the basic facts - can you show me where it hurts?

Can you imagine if one of them forgets the certificate in their other pants pocket one day?

Wait, so you're saying people in your state aren't required to drive with photo driver's license?

Are you also suggesting that when people are arrested, shouldn't be bothered to have their backgrounds checked?

These are some of the same weak ass arguments that have been made since day one, I don't see why hispanics needs to get up in arms about this, nobody is looking to ship non-illegals out of the country.

the threat is more about police abuses, which are already pretty common in arizona, and the entire southwest in general. what are the signs of not being legal that the police should look out for? low riders? tinted windows? brown skin???

all these laws only give police more power. more right to pull you over and harass you. they could arrest you, take you to jail for the weekend, and get away with it because they thought you weren't legal.

so it's not really so much about getting deported, although in the past legal citizens have been sent to mexico based on phenotype.

I worry about further abuses of power. Honestly, I never used to feel this way, but I guess I've seen one too many people of color be subjected to police abuse. Besides, backgrounds could be checked BEFORE this legislation anyway, couldn't they?

The Fourth Amendment prohibits unreasonable searches and seizures. It also requires search and arrest warrants to be judicially sanctioned and supported by probable cause.

People in our state are not required to have their birth certificate with them. Not the same as a photo ID.

This bill doesn't require them to have a birth certificate.

And most people should be carrying either a driver's license, or a state ID, anyway.

Besides, backgrounds could be checked BEFORE this legislation anyway, couldn't they?
They could, however it was not up to the STATE to enforce immigration laws, this legislation allows local law enforcement to check their immigration status as well before someone is released.

If that were the case, then what's the big deal?

And before someone brings up the damn birth certificate again, here's the revised bill: http://www.azleg.gov/alispdfs/council/SB1070-HB2162.PDF
