Men and Women will never be "equal." It is as simple as that.

The women's right movement really messed up the roles men and women have in society overlaping a lot of it yet leaving beind some of the old seperations. If men and women are equal why is it still rude for a man not to open a door for a woman? Why do women not even have to sign up for the draft? Why do women still expect men to pay for the majority (if not everything)?

The history of women's right to vote is shrouded in ignorance. Many people falsely believe women weren't allowed to vote b/c men deemed them inferior. The truth is a lot of men weren't allowed to vote either. During the colonial era, men were denied the right to vote if they didn't pay taxes, if they didn't own property, if they were indentured servants, if they were convicts, etc. One reason voting was so restrictive was to prevent a man who had little stake in the community from having authority over municipal affairs. Many single or widowed women who owned property were allowed to vote.

The founders of this nation had an entirely different view than we do today. They put greater emphasis on the household rather than the individual. It was traditionally believed that man and wife become one not only in the spiritual or romantic sense, but also in the legal sense. The family has always been considered the foundation of society. Therefore, the vote was given to the head of each household instead of each member residing within it. The husband represented his household at the polls, much as our senators represent us when they vote in the Senate. If a husband was unable to cast a ballot, the wife could vote in his place.

If you want to compare rights, women today have far more rights than men. Please don't use the bullshit excuse that men are payed more than women. It's been proven numerous times by researchers that men work in higher-paying jobs than women. How many women lawyers, scientists, and engineers do you see? Now compare that to the number of women teachers and secretaries. If it's true that women are paid less than men for the same jobs, then how come every employer doesn't hire all women? More work for less pay, right? The answer is b/c men and women are paid the same.

Women are now considered an equal to men , so doesnt that mean that later on , men will be able to hit a woman and not be seen as something thats very bad ?

now , in the present , if you think about it , men have LESS of an advantage torwards woman . woman can file a rape without any evidence , they can file complaints about sexual abuse at work . they can charge men with almost everything , and the ppl will VERY RARELY put the male innocent when its a female making the charges ... they can get away with police easier , they can cheat even BETTER than men because its easy for them to make excuses ... its not like their BF/husband can ask "" why do you have lipstick on your shirt?"" or something like that ... you get it?
Is this for real?? Of COURSE it is NOT okay (nor will it ever be moral) for a man to hit a woman. It is also not okay for a man to hit another man, a woman to hit a man, or a woman to hit a woman. And for the record, all the examples of things you say women can "make up" can be (and sometimes are) claimed by men as well. If you are worried about female "players" and "whores", I'd suggest you either learn to pick better or stick with men.

Neo: I believe you are correct about the disparity of salary being in part due to career choice. And by the way, I know LOTS of female scientists, in fact, women are just about to outnumber men in the field of forensic science.

While it is true a few states allowed women to vote prior to 1920, that was certainly NOT the rule. The states that allowed women to vote were WILDERNESS states (think of Alaska) that were attempting to boost their populations. Women were largely NOT allowed to vote, and yes, it was because we were deemed inferior (as property), as were all your other examples of those who could not vote (although you were correct about the indentured servants). Women who were allowed to vote in their husband's stead (in states where it was otherwise not allowed) were expected to vote their HUSBAND'S conscience, not their own.

As for the rest of your comment about women and voting, which borders on sounding nostalgic, I have one question: How much is the Republican party paying you to spin?

Shadowfox: I don't know how things are where you live, but where I live, it is not considered rude to not open a woman's door. However, it IS considered very nice if you do. And by the way, if I get to the door first, I hold it open for whomever is behind me, male or female. That is just good manners. I also give up my seat to elderly men (and women). But I agree with you about the draft.

I don't understand how any woman can vote Pro-Life. Or in the last two elections, vote Republican. This is just me though.

I think Pro-Lifers are deliberately taking women's rights away. They are telling women that it'd be better for the government to choose what can and cannot be done to their own bodies.

As far as women's rights in the workplace; I think it can be advantageous. Look with some of the affirmative action, hiring blacks to meet "quotas" over a more qualified and capable white male, well, that doesn't make sense. I'm sure that some women may get the nod over an equal male for an advancement position. Maybe not.

Oh, and it is never, and will never be acceptable to hit a woman. A man hitting another man, I have no problem with.

Here are just a few inequalities I came up with off the top of my head:

    1. Men are drafted to fight in the war, women aren't.

    2. Men are royally screwed in divorce court. Women get custody of the children in 90% of divorces. Also, women are entitled to half of all material possessions (most of which the man paid for) aquired during marriage.

    3. In professional sports, a top-ranking woman athlete is allowed to play against men if she is good enough. However, a low-ranking guy athlete who could make a better living playing in the women's league isn't even given the option.

    4. Women have special opportunities made just for them like women-only scholarships, clubs, gyms, and shelters. I typed women's center in google and it gave me 40,300,000 search results. When I did the same for men's center, it gave me 13,000,000 search results.
