He might be doing it to make you jealous - that's the only time he has excuse for doing this.
Why would one have crushes when the person they love is right there next to them and gives them everything they need from the opposite sex.

It sounds like it's just a quirk he has. If it bothers you, though, then you should definitely talk to him about it, and hopefully he'll try to be more considerate around you.
