Actually he is not straight from Korea, but he stayed there before high school. Thus his cultural identity was largely fixed by that time.
I think if he is pretty traditional, he may be put off by a direct approach. In my experience, many Asian cultures are bound to their sense of modesty.
Surely his parents have made clear their dating preferences by now, as I am sure yours have. Maybe you can try something like "oh, my friend from China is having some dating issues because her parents want her to date only Chinese. Is this a first-generation thing? Are your parents the same way?"
