No, because if you wrote 3x(3+1) it would be indicating that the digits in the bracketrs could be added, making the equation 3x(4) which would be 12x, and not the same thing at all. Trust me on this one.

i don't know, what you're being taught in america, or what's being taught in schools anywhere these days, to be honest, but in 1990s' austrian schools it would have been 3x(3+1).

Hey, math is math. It's the international language, so what's right in America is right in Austria, and 3x(x+1) is definitely incorrect. I could break it down, but.......meh. And by the way, I'm Canadian.
