Why do people hate lawyers?

Sometimes innocent people go to prison for crimes they didn't commit. We need good defense lawyers for these people.

Of course, what you say is true. I just feel that some lawyers are purely in for the money and will even defend a serial murderer (even if they know they are guilty) regardless of morals. I suppose someone has to, yes, but I'd like to see more lawyers who would refuse to represent someone in that situation, and I'm sure some already exist.

I think that your goodself, along with many others in this thread have at most a very thin understanding of the the role of the defense lawyer. For starters If the lawyer knows that the client is guilty then he has precisely 2 options:
(i) Option 1 is to tell the client to plead guilty.
(ii) Option 2 is to withdraw from the case and inform the court that he/ she is professionally embarrassed.

(in my country anyway)

They defend anybody no matter who it is. They are just in it for the money.
