    Do I need therapy

I realise that many people who find this forum have relationship difficulties and often such difficulties occur because the person has some personal psychological problems. But I often get the impression that I must be the only person on the planet not having therapy for something or other. How did people survive before therapists?
Call me racist if you like but this seems an especially American phenomenon. Does this mean Americans are more fruit loopy than everyone else?

The reason for seemingly higher dependence on therapy is because our society is progressive and not stuck with some internalizing, conservative bulllshit. Societies like those usually have serious problems because the pent-up turmoil frequently manifests itself in extremely violent ways. This is why I find most countries where Communism and Socialism are extremely prevalent are so crazy; Marx was an insane moron or a master BS'er. Political views tend to reflect people's mental stability.

It's really just a cultural thing, in other words. Some cultures think seeking help is womanly. Others are countries where people have freedom and don't subscribe to extremist tenets.

Another factor to consider is the psychological tension that arises from population strain and increasing industrialization: I find the more densely populated the area, the more insane the mass of people. This is explains why L.A., New York etc. are utter shitholes. Your mental state is somewhat a product of your environment and when one lives in awful places, you're bound to be crazy.

Because we have to chase him. Because he's the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So we'll hunt him. Because he can take it. Because he's not our hero. He's a silent guardian, a watchful protector. A dark knight.

Therapy is about change. If a person is unhappy, they need to find out why and do something about it. Sometimes people need help making a change or realizing what change they need to make. This is most easily accomplished by talking through issues with someone else. People sometimes have difficulty asking themselves the questions they need to ask to come to a realization. Or they may need someone to make an observation they are unable to make. In the past, people had a more extended network of family and friends to talk to. Nowadays, many people spend a lot of time watching TV or media and they are getting very poor advice about what life is about. Even with all our modern communication methods, we are more isolated than ever. What emotional depth can you achieve through a text message? E-mail is better, but sometimes people need the interaction of one-to-one conversation with someone who is invested in their well-being to construct and accomplish the goals of living a well-adjusted life.

I think it has something to do with the poor way you treat (or should I say turn away or ignore) your mentally ill. Add Dad not locking up his "Muskat" and the rest is your sad history.

    @ Dem Well said.

Nah, that's not it. There's plenty of help for the batshit insane. It's just that there are too many stupid insane families breeding and thinking their batsht ways are sane.

Therapy certainly isn't fashionable here in Australia. Australians make jokes about Americans and therapy. The attitude here (and what probably comes through in my posts) is get over it and get on with life. If Aussies do do therapy, it's not something they'd be open about.

Having said that, we've used a child psychologist to help us with our autistic son. A friend used the same lady to learn where her child's behavioural issues were stemming from. Both were successful. And there are cases where I think adult therapy can help a really messed up adult. It's rare that I suggest therapy to a poster, but sometimes they appear so messed up that it seems warranted.

Naturally, I think psychological help is necessary for the mentally ill. I assume that's not being questioned in this thread.

Oh, and, this goes back to what I said about your mentally ill being ignored and turned away :

I know everything there is to know about my fellow 'Murricans and women. They're both pretty simple, really..

My point was, the society in America is collectively batshit insane, so insane is hence the norm and sanity is insanity. There's plenty of help but most 'Murricans are superficial morons and think they're God's gift to the world. So, they don't think they need help.

Wow. That's fantastic. America has adequate help for mentally ill people! Half your luck.

You have free services for those who can't afford treatment? Enough psychairtrists and government funding? You don't have a problem with mentally ill people ending up homeless or committing crimes? Everyone can afford meds for mental illness and/or depression? Ease of access to housing for the mentally ill? Respite for the carers?

What a utopian place America must be.
