Is there any validity to this?

There is an awful lot of "her past is her past, doesn't matter, get over it" here.

I can see subscribing to that to an extent, but do you think being with someone with a similar background to you a benefit? I don't mean two virgins, but similar when it comes to experiences, relationships, etc?

yes, my example is marrige or divorce. im was both lol. women who have been there or were they seemed to understand more so about things in genernal then the ones who have never even been engaged. thats my example and i say it holds true.

I'm with a girl who is completely unparalleled to me in almost every way, everything from money to hair styles! Honestly, it does make it more difficult, but it's not impossible, when it comes down to bare personality traits. Similar beliefs systems yes. The problem becomes when men hold women to standards they themselves are not held too. We call that hypocrisy, and it doesn't stand here.
