I think that without religion, this world would be a better place.
I don't much about the Afghan War and I didn't bother listening to Obama's speech either.
But here's what I do know:
- We've been fighting this war ever since terrorists flew a plane into the WTC and the Pentagon (what they did was not cool)
- I believe London experienced a bus bombing or something at one time too
- I read a book written by former Afghan who now lives in the US, and I know that the Taliban turned Afghanistan into a police state and they are not supported by the locals there. But they rule by terror anyway.
- Obama sent more troops probably cuz we're getting our asses kicked over there
Anyway, I support Obama's decision cuz I feel like this war is something we should finish. You can call it imperialism, but whether or not America has a place in spreading democracy and policing the world is a different debate. We might not be able to change Afghanistan cuz it's so backward and ****ed up but we can at least try to get rid of the Taliban.
Regarding what you said about the average person having no say in politics, well I guess that is true in this case. But for the president to start a war, it does have to pass Congress which is represented by people we choose. And we did also choose Obama. So indirectly, we did choose this.
And public opinion is actually quite important to elected officials. If you read through history and analyze the decisions of presidents made during times of war, you'll see that sometimes they actually did what was worse for the nation (and they knew this), but they did it anyway because it was more popular.
Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.
Wait, what's Afghanistan? Does it have oil?
