Crush Situation/Talk to her online?

So, i met my crush at a party a couple weekends ago, but i really didn't get to talk to her at all because she had to leave like right when i got there. Since then my friend who knows her has been trying to hook us up but so far that hasn't worked out, im thinking it's time for me to just take matters into my own hands and instant message her online. She knows who i am, but nothing more than that and im almost 100% sure she knows that i like her (my friend or one of her friends told her, im pretty sure).

so i tried to IM her on friday, but i caught her just as she was going out.....it was hard enough to IM her once, now i gotta do it again, ugh....

My question is....would it be ok for me to try and break the ice online? is it acceptible in my situation? and....what things should i say to her online to break the ice and get into a convo with her....i really want to hang out with her sometime and get to know her.
