I enjoy math and chemistry classes. To me, those are a kind of fun

And no, I'm not on a scholarship. They are all need-based and I don't qualify. If my dad lost his job any one of these last rounds of layoffs, I would be going for free

Did you mention taiko drumming to your son, VAsh?

I was in an orchestra as a student, volunteered at the hospital and worked in a lab. You have to really watch your commitments with the goal of graduate or professional school. DM would almost have been better to 'play' in year 1 & 2. But now its all about the GPA & getting good references.

Have you written the MCAT yet, DM?

Do you know about the Feynman Lectures, DM? I think you'd enjoy them. We have them as print, but I see you can listen to several online now.

No I'm gonna take the MCAT this winter or something

One thing I hate about medical school admissions (and it is EXACTLY the same as college admissions) is that they don't give a flying fucck about your grades. Either you HAVE the grades, or you don't. The fact that you have a 4.0 in 12 different theoretical math courses that the 99.99% of premeds would have a 0.5 in is meaningless. I didnt get into National Honor Society when I was in high school for the same reason- you either had the grades or didn't, and THEN they considered what else you had

Since I've been in college I've had a job, tutored, volunteered in the hospital, worked in a lab, and am part of some volunteer organization. I still have a few other things to do like shadow a doctor and whatnot

But the big disadvantage is that I'm a white male from the northeast. MEDICAL SCHOOLS HATE US. The Harvard guy I mentioned was so fuccking cynical about the process. Him and his best friend were both premeds, had perfect (45) MCAT scores, his friend was summa cum laude, they had both taken graduate level chemistry courses etc... and they were rejected from a lot of schools. Both consider it because they were 1) white and 2) male. I can get in, but probably not to a good one cause they want diversity and not quality. Fuccking motherfuccking assholes

Just the other day I walked by our admissions office and nearly walked in to berat the people who decide admissions. 3 things matter that decide how well you do in college: 1) AP scores 2) SAT scores 3) Class rank

NOTHING ELSE FUCCKING MEASURED HOW WELL I WOULD DO IN COLLEGE!!!

I cannot WAIT to troll the admissions people. I'm going to do it this semester and take a giant shit down their fuccking wormy necks

Naw, I never really even knew who Feynman was until you mentioned him. I guess I'll learn some of the shit he did in p.chem

Actually, it turns out he was buddies with Hans Bethe, who is the namesake of my dorm building cause he was on oru faculty for literally like 60 years. His wife ate with us a couple weeks ago, lol. Cause Bethe himself died a couple years ago At age 98

lol, apparently Feynman also lectured here for a while, but the snow scared him off and made him move to CalTech

Crazy esoteric physics stuff. I don't understand any of the math, but he makes the lectures sound as if I could. LOL.

Feynman was the guy on the NASA panel when Challenger blew up. When you have spare reading time (LOL), get the book "What Do You Care What Other People Think". Its a very good read.

Re: MCAT admissions, etc. Been there, feel for you. Yes, its a total game DM. But you gotta dance if you want in. Change is easier from the inside than the outside. Get in first, and then piss on their shoes.

why are you taking upper-level courses that aren't relevant to med school if you know admissions committees only care about grades?

Neo, I've been through the interview process (and got accepted): They DO look at the type of courses you take. Someone from physics/chemistry will get a higher rank than a straight bio applicant, esp if their grades are comparable.

You say that as though these courses are hurting my grades. My GPA for the 5 math classes I've completed so far is a 4.0. That isn't exactly hurting my grade

And unlike nearly all colleges, most of the courses here are curved to a B-, or a 2.7. Because we aren't bitch ass pussies

And WHY am I taking math courses? I don't know. Because I hate the typical premed who is a dumbass and fails at math and distance myself from that. Because I enjoy a good math lecture. Because a semester without math isn't really a semester at all

Because people who are mathematically impaired are idiots. They can be the most eloquent speakers or writers in the world, but I have learned that is only a matter of "try"

How about THAT? If someone is unable to rigorously provide a limit or ascertain the properties of a particular inner product space, I will think less of you

I also hate people who think organic chemistry is difficult, people who actively hate organic chemistry, and people who do poorly in organic chemistry

I also hate the social engineers on admissions boards

I feel like half the girls (and guys) here in the US have STDs. More than half

Is this a right suspicion to have?

I think it's at least 25% of people in your age group. Yuck.

Like I said, you are wasted in medicine, DM. You will hate its predictable frustrations after a while. You are too smart to become just a clinician, even a specialist.

Get yourself into an MD/PhD program. At least consider it. Running a research program will keep you from being completely bored with your clinical work.

I've actually been giving a lot of consideratin to an MD/PhD program because the fact that I have taken real science and math courses (in contrast to the average piece of shit premed) would seem to work for me in getting into such a program. On the downside, there are usually a lot fewer MD/PhD positions available and I would suppose they are just as hungry, if not more hungry, for minorities and women in MD/PhD programs than in just a normal MD program

I'm probably going to apply to at least a few MD/PhD programs

I should tell them that I am hispanic or black or Native American and I would get into any medical school guaranteed

btw, I am going to meet with a faculty advisor person and talk to her about how I get involved (in any way) with admissions to our undergraduate program. I am going to troll the living shit out of the admissions people who turn down overqualified white males in favor of minorities and women
