She won't even let him criticize. If she wants to learn how to cook... whether it's for her man or for herself... she should be more open to criticism.

Most people who think they know how to cook... because they cook it until they think it's done or edible... still aren't cooking things the way they are supposed to be cooked. So criticism is very important in cooking.

So she cooked two good things in a row last night.

    Including chewy brownies from scratch.

    They were delicious.

Help/Show her how to do it right or don't criticize so harshly.

I think the problem is a difference in tastes too. I prefer pretty bland food myself (not too bland - but don't overseason) and absolutely despise super sweet stuff - I have delicate taste buds.

I can't drink koolaid without dying.

I don't criticize, I just stop eating it.

Anyway, for example, she wanted to make these lemon raspberry bars as a dessert.

    UGH!

    Lemons and raspberries?

That's sour and tart all in one!

No thank you, gimme those brownies.

I haven't been eating much lately. Today, all I ate was grapes, a carrot and a meal from Mcdonalds. I did slice up a cantaloupe though. I'll savor the fruitiness.

Lemon raspberry bars sound delicious! What is wrong w/you Fras?

Graham cracker bottom w/lemon icing, raspberry spread and crumble topping? Or white chocolate spread on top?

I had to learn to cook when I got married. I used to burn snacking cakes (just add water). A friend of mine gave me a copy of Fannie Farmer cookbook as a birthday present & I was on my way. Now I make just about everything from scratch, from all sorts of world regions. I do a lot better w/savory than sweet, tho, even today.

Have her choose recipes from Epicurious.com. They are normally rated by people and most are decent.

Don't discourage her from learning, Fras. Cooking is a skill you get better at with practice.

And cooking together with some background music is plenty of fun.

because cooking is one of those things that require positive reinforcement. It's easier to take criticism if encouragement is given at the same time, for example: "This dessert looks great, and even tastes pretty good (even though i'm not a fan of raspberries). If you can make raspberries taste okay, I bet you can work wonders with chocolate. Did you know chocolate is my favorite?"
