Ode to the modern times

I found a great person, together we’ll be
Spring time has come to heal winter in me
Together it feels like we simply belong
But should it all end, I can do it alone

Now it is certain together we’ll wed
There were simply so many great times we’ve had
It feels like the greatest of loves has been born
But if it fails, I can do it alone

Some time has passed, we are still a great pair
But not all is perfect in new life we share
There are pressures and stress, I don’t like this new tone
Sometimes I long about being alone

Some issues came up, but they’ve always been near
Ofcourse we just ignore them year after year
Don’t really care about what goes on in my home
I don't need no one, I can do it alone

So we became strangers and sometimes we stray
Oh well, I always knew it wouldn’t last anyway
And even though all of our trust is now gone
I don’t really care, I can do it alone

Now all alone, no more crosses to bear
No more problems to solve or someone to care
Now I can just be myself, simply be
I never need no one and no one needs me
But sometimes I wonder how it could have been
If more worthy things mattered and not who can win
If more time and joy in life was simply shared
Maybe life would have been better if only I cared

In the end I have found why great times are now gone
I should’ve thought less about being alone

This notion that people should stick together through thick and thin. It just reminds me of the time when women were stuck with their husbands and had to take whatever they dished out.

A lot of husbands no longer dish it out though. In many cases here at LF relationships just go through the motions and end because of people's lack of understanding and coping skills (especially in families when kids are involved).

I think that's what I find sad about the times we live in.

I liked it. You are [deliberately] missing the point, Grib. Its not meant to encourage tolerance of bad behaviour or make people stay with bad partners, but inspire one to find other solutions besides quitting. Too many good couples give up too soon on each other, I think, for the wrong reasons.

I think that's what I find sad about the times we live in.

The coping skills comment is a really good point, Mish. This is something that all struggling couples should be asked, I think. CBs recent comment in another thread about a poster not being able to let go of small issues is probably due to a lack of coping mechanisms, other than arguing. It makes complete sense that someone might release stress on a partner if they have no other outlet available to them.
