He is using the concept of racism to promote his sci-fi writing career. Like he said, it is sarcastic humour. What I don't know, is why fox t.v is taking it with a straight face and exploiting it.

I'm at work so I can't watch it, but I have to wonder if he isn't just, y'know, "writing" between the lines and in typical news fashion that reporter is pretending to be oblivious.
