...this is just my perspective on the situation...
Try going for a mile a day one week. Then, next week go for 1.5 miles a day. Then, the next week, go for 2 miles a day. Take breaks as needed. Running on the street beats running on a treadmill. Try to find a hilly environment. Hope this helps!

Try to run on grass as much as possible - reduces the pounding on your ankles/joints.
Also, try to do some short sprints at full pace, then jog, then sprint again - it's a killer but great aerobic exercise.
