^^^ wow, i can't do that... it's a good thing that i only have a medium size one so i only have to rep 5 pounds.
raverboy
...this is just my perspective on the situation...
So? How is this relevant to my opinion that taking pleasure in killing animals is wierd? And BTW - I already said I don't have a problem with hunting for food.
And BTW - I grew up spending my summmers on a farm where our meat came from the chicken coop and pig pen. My parents liked to hunt. I've been around PLENTY of animals being slaughtered for dinner (probably a lot more than you), and while I've never killed a mammal, I grew up catching and gutting fish. I'd say that qualifies me having an opinion, though of course you aren't obligated to share it.
Yeah, that still sounds like sport to me. Sorry.

I don't understand how you wouldn't understand gaining satisfaction from successfully hunting your food.
Humans gain satisfaction from virtually everything they do.
From sex.
To getting pregnant.
To growing crops.
To hunting.
To making money.
To finding that one item in a store you couldn't find anywhere else.
That's my point, why would somebody keep doing something that made them sad or unsatisfied?
Really I find your perception on hunting more disturbing.
I've often noticed this air of civil superiority with you that continues to reinforce my prejudices towards crazy liberal Californians.
I have no remorse about acquiring food or anything else I require, so hunting is merely an act... much like driving (to the supermarket) except with hunting, the meat is free and the animal dies free.
It's more that people should "be able" to kill, without any hangups, if required, as effortlessly as getting dressed, starting the automobile, and driving to a supermarket to purchase meat for one's barbecue.I don't really understand the whole argument that people should kill if they want to eat meat unless they are also willing to say that people who want to eat veges should be willing to be farmers.
There is no difference.
It's the cycle of life and death.
As for your vegetable comparison, it doesn't work.
Vegetable eaters have no hang ups about picking a fresh piece of produce themselves and chowing down on it (cooked or uncooked). It's actually an ideal or pipe dream ingrained in us and celebrated across all cultures and ages. It's not as if there are hordes of vegetable eaters refusing to eat anything not wrapped in cellophane or left to slowly over ripen on shelves.
The real problem with modern society is that it's been mollycoddled to the brink of it's own spiritual annihilation.
Fears, pervasive phobias, and random thoughts take a higher precedence over logic, nature and the nature of our existence.
If one considers the killing of animals nothing more than another task necessary for human survival, then my vegetable anaolgy works for me, and speaking of spiritual annihilation, it seems that as a woman - who brings life IN to the world - and a nurse, whose job it is to promote healing, it would be odd if I were also finding pleasure in killing.
Anyway, I guess there is a huge difference in psyche between animal farming and hunting. Sure, our meat was fresh, and the chore was done matter-of-factly, but there was no pleasure taken in the slaughter, unlike there apparently is for some people when they hunt.
Fras - my "California superiority" is non-existent in my mind - it must be a product of your inferiority complex. In the west, we aren't obligated to share anyone else's opinion for fear of being labeled in such a silly way.

All of that is irrelevant... you've never killed anything... the fish you gutted were probably dead anyway. There are so many things dying right now so that you and your family can live. Why not feel guilt about that? Why not feel remorse? Is it because someone else is doing the slaughtering for you? The mass slaughter of life includes you as a benefactor. You are just as 'guilty' as the one who slaughters the animals for you.
You are the pot calling the kettle black. There is no room for superiority for you here. You are an omnivore... your existence brings death to other living things. That's the way of life. By nature, we do not feel remorse when we kill to eat --- to feel remorse is a learned concept.
Btw... what does being a woman have to do with hunting or slaughtering? So what if you drop a baby between your legs? Crack babies are born everyday -- doesn't stop the destructive nature of their mothers. The nurses at the nursing homes and hospitals I've worked at were hired to promote healing... but they did anything but that. They were just there to collect a paycheck.
YOU would feel bad... because you've learned that you're suppose to. That's all that it boils down to. You would feel bad about the act... and so you think others must as well. This just isn't so --- it isn't even a natural occurrence... this remorse for killing for food.

I'd hate hunting. I hate killing things. I'd hate the thought this poor beast was minding its own business before I came along and blew a hole in its head for no better reason than I gained some sort of enjoyment from the exercise. I'm with you vashti, I don't get it.
Is it burnin'? Well, f-ck, now you're learnin'.
I take great pride in being able to aim my gun. It's not as easy as 'point' and shoot. Even more stressful when you know there is potential food in front of you... and if you miss, all that food goes running away. You'll have to wait hours or even days for another opportunity.
Do I like to watch the deer squirm in the death-throws? Not really? Did I go hunting just to see it's blood gushing --- just to kill? No, I went hunting for the meat. I am thrilled about being able to properly aim the gun and acquire the meat with it.
You keep insinuating I gain enjoyment from killing--- sport, but that isn't the case here. I enjoy shooting my gun (because it took a lot practice to master) and I enjoy fresh meat... neither of these two things equals enjoyment of death or cruelty to animals.

As I've said 100 times, it's not the death of the animal I particularly object to; in fact I said if necessary, I would kill an animal (though I would do so only if my vegetables ran out). It's the psyche behind the person doing the killing.
Aeradalia - I really can't address either your attitude towards motherhood or nursing. They are based solely on your own experiences, and as such, I suppose it might be hard to conceive of it being any other way for other people.
