My ex girlfriend slapped me once because I said something dumb...but hey I always say stupid stuff, I'm a guy. First time I let it slide, second time I was furious, I set her straight right then and there. I simply said I wasn't going to tolerate physical abuse in a relationship, that there's absolutely no reason for it. She kind of freaked out I think and thought I was going to break up with her right then and there. She apologized and was all sad...she never did it again after that.
