    Hurricane Ike

Dang, this bastard is big now. It's supposedly the size of the state of Texas itself, and FEMA is projecting that it will destroy over 4,500 buildings. I'm just sitting here watching CNN reporters get blown around like ragdolls.

Do we have any South Texan LFers?

    I hope everyone is safe.

    Thank god it missed us.

We're getting the backass wind of it, and some rain. Gusts up to 40 mph.

I definitely did not want to evacuate again. It's about time Texas got a turn.

It's the reincarnation of my late uncle Ike!

Watch it rip the shit out of everything.

Has anyone heard how the size of this hurricane compares with to the Galveston hurricane of 1900? That sucker killed 8,000 people.

I think Ike is a category 2 and the 1900 one was a category 4. I was just looking at this story about the 1900 hurricane on cnn.com:

"The unnamed storm was first detected in the Atlantic on August 27, reaching Cuba as a tropical storm on September 3. Like Ike, the hurricane crossed Cuba and entered the Gulf of Mexico, crashing ashore just south of Galveston on September 8.

Galveston Island was completely covered by 8- to 16-foot storm tides. Estimates of the death toll range from 6,000 to 12,000, and property damage was estimated at $30 million.

Galveston in 1900 was a rich shipping city, home to nearly 40,000 people, many of them made wealthy by Galveston's position as Texas' chief port. But they weren't prepared for September 8."

Sad story. Can you imagine trying to evacuate in a horse and buggy?

I read a book about that Galveston hurricane... I can't get the picture out of my mind of the children from the orpahnage drowning with the nuns.

Gah, I know. So freaking sad. I always think about the disabled and the elderly at times like these, too.

While you're all out there voting for obama, donate to the red cross too!
