Personal experience note: you can expose endothelial cells to almost anything in a petri dish & it will cause abnormal growth. Doesn't mean *anything* about what it will do in humans.

I've heard the too much water thing before and did bother to verify it, but I've forgotten why...wasn't it something about the water diluting the fluid between synapses too much that normal & vital brain functions are interrupted to the point that death can result?

In addition to additional stress on the kidneys, the overdilution of the blood's sodium content makes it hypotonic compared to the cells, and the cells (including brain cells) compensate by drawing in water. Then, the cells explode.
