Proper greeting for a first date?

Ok, so I'm having an "argument" with a friend of mine. His sister set him up with some girl on a blind date, and we're both wondering what the generally accepted form of greeting for one of these is. They've talked a few times on the phone I think, but haven't met in person. He says a hug is warranted . . . but I feel like that might be a little too forward? I'd suggest a handshake, but that seems too contrived. So I basically suggested that no actual physical contact at the time of meeting would probably be the best thing. What do you think? They're both 24.

I apologise in advanced for my atrocious spelling. The advice or View I give probably wont be much good but it may help some one make a good suggestion!

    Kiss on the cheek? No.

I suggest no physical contact. Smile and look friendly.

I'm with blauw - kiss on the cheek sounds good to me. Polite, yet not too formal or forward. Go for it!

But what if she thinks he's ugly and wants to smite him for even making an approach?

If an ugly female did that to me I would experience that emotion where you wish with all of your might that you were invisible...

Kiss someone you dont really know as a greeting, thats probably a surefire way to freak anyone out. Maybe a hug, maybe but the problem there is that theres an oppertunity for rejection for said hug and that wouldent be good.
