Alexi - You do grades for your Clarinet?

Nope. And a good thing too. Since I'm almost completely self-taught (having only about ten private lessons) I never was told to learn my scales and all the 'basics' (which I believe are a necessary part to go from grade to grade)

I've done up to Grade 4 on my Saxophone about One 'n' a half years ago (Skippin' Grade One).. I just couldn't be bothered anymore.. LoL.. Hehehe..

But now my Teacher wants me to do Grade 7.

I don't want to and I can't anywayzZ. Because in order for me to do that I have to pass Grade 5 Theory.. which I know nothin' about.

LoL.. So.. Weeeeeeeeeee.. I guess I'm not gonna do it.. Lucky me..

Grades are overrated anyway. What really matters in the long run is "Can you sightread well? If given time to learn it, can you? Can you play well technically and can you get the message across musically?" If all those are in order you'll be fine. Learning your theories and scales and all that nonesense is just really to help facilitate ONE of those things I mentioned above.

I was on the drumline - we had no grades - you were either good - or you sucked

well we did go by chairs - 1st chair being the best - but other than that there were no other things

I was 2nd chair out of 35 percussionists

Yeah - I would have gotten a full scholarship for band if I wouldn't have skipped so many classes my senior year of high school
