About Vashti

For any who may have wondered: http://www.ucalgary.ca/~elsegal/Shokel/910301_Vashti.html

And, just to keep it balanced: "Hayward" is an Old English occupational name deriving from, oddly enough, "hay ward." A hay ward "was keeper or guardian of the hedged enclosure." That meant, basically, he captured livestock that had escaped from their hedgerow enclosures and returned them to their owners.

On names, everybody knows the word "janitor" derives from Janus, right? Know why?

Hi Hayward. I thought Tanya said that she didn't like this author and didn't agree with him because he paints women and jewish people in a negative way. Like this quote:

What a sad story though. I hope this doesn't compel a new trend of people changing their names to their favourite martyrs like Prometheus and Jesus Christ

Didn't know that. But I've not seen much she agrees with from a male perspective, so, I'm not surprised. But in the case of the quote you offer, the pharisees of old appear to have been awfully self-rightgeous and hypocritical (the word even has that meaning now). In the quote, I believe the author was referring to THEIR perspective, not his own. It can be interpreted two ways. Short of asking the writer, depends in what you care to read into it.

OK, I'll bite: Lets see... Janus is a Roman god. The month January comes from Janus. One of Saturns satellites is called Janus. And theres some story about how Janus kicked Romulus' butt for stealing the women of some little hick country. Maybe it was Remus..can't remember but was one of the founders of Rome. Is it something to do w/him having "two faces"?

Janitor... hmmm... nope. Stumped. Maybe someone can add based on what I said...

I understand Hayward. I think the argument maybe that the writer thinks that jewish people (Or the highest order of jewish Rabbis) would be so ignorant as to condemn a woman based on the saying that if she wasn't guilty then God wouldn't allow her to be punished... But then again I'm not really familiar with the story and the customs of the times, especially in an area like Persia.

It's just that quote made a flashback of the horrible experience of watching the "Passion of Christ" where jews were portrayed as some sub human beasts with no morals and the "glorious" arian God like white people who let their saviour be sacrificed to apeace the region. The region which was part of their empire at the time but they just wanted to be nice to their subjects (Because, as you know, Ancient Romans were very nice people)

Janus: the first clause of the first sentence should be all you need: http://www.pantheon.org/articles/j/janus.html.

"Fascinate" is another great one etymologically. As is "testify."

Pharisees: I think the author is just relating their rational. Not his.

The Passion: Dramatic license. Antagonists and protagonists portrayed in high contrast relief. Nothing more. Anyone taking it literally would have to be very, very uninformed and gullible...which would account for about all MOR ("middle of the road") Americans and ALL our (US) right-wing flag huggers...say, like Bluevetteracer...who's a pilot, btw, in possession of classified (secret) knowledge...just like the pharisees were.

No. That would be "Uranus," I believe. Or is it "urine-us"? I can never remember which orifice to use as a mnemonic.
