The pain is usually due to fear (and tensing of the muscles) and breaking through the hymen. Masturbating might help relax one a little, but it won't help with the pain of breaking through the hymen.

It wasn't painful for me my first time. It just varies. I think masturbation is good because it helps you learn your body so you know what brings you pleasure.

There are two ways to answer this.

Days, weeks, or months before she loses her virginity a girl would be smart to learn about her orgasm. This is something you could do privately, by yourself, if you think it's embarassing. Later you can learn to share it with your lover.

It's a good idea to have non-insertive sex - petting, outercourse, or whatever you want to call it - with the boy who will be your first partner. You will learn to be comfortable when you are naked with each other. He will use his mouth and fingers, and you will be teaching him about your sexual response so he can "read" your body. And don't neglect to return the favor to him! You need to learn about his response, too.

Minutes before your vagina envelopes an erect penis for the first time you should have an orgasm. This could be from self-masturbation, but your partner will probably want to help you. (You should have already done it for him, or asked him to do it himself, so that he will be less rushed and able to concentrate on pleasing you.) There are several reasons for this:
- It will help relax you in general and take away some nervousness
- It will make your vagina as lubricated as it can get
